Yep – when he’s passive and relaxed, he should get praise and a treat.

Always, always, always praise and treat BEFORE the attack.

Better yet, learn to spot when an attack is coming and put him down before he has a chance to harm you.

When you notice he’s “gearing up”, use a loud noise to distract him and teach him that bad, bad things happen when he thinks of being mean. If you can, keep a water squirter near you. Blast the little angel puff in the face when he bites or scratches. Try to get him the instant BEFORE he sinks into your skin.

Buy him toys he CAN attack. Try large-ish stuffed animals.

Buy “fishing poles like” toys that will keep him busy far, far away from your delicate skin. Some cats will chase a laser pointer until they drop. Tired kitties are non-violent kitties.

Consider getting another cat. Some cats think of their humans as enormous cats and honestly can’t understand why we don’t want to wrestle and pounce and play bite like we are hunting gazelle on safari. These cats do well with another cat to channel that wild side. Not to mention another cat won’t put up with any crap and will give your little angel puff a right beat down for stepping over the line.

    Could be just the thing.

    Good luck.

Sorry, but you’re confusing the species. What works with a dog will NEVER work with a cat. If you reward a cat by giving it a treat, not only will he not make the connection, he’ll think you’re his slave.

If you discipline him for negative behavior, the chances are he will do something more horrific just for spite.
